Which moon is which

The moon characters come from two different places in Unicode and behave differently because of it. The distinction is not cosmetic: one set is emoji and renders in colour, the other is text and takes the colour of the surrounding words.

That last row is worth being clear about. ☪ is the star and crescent, a symbol of Islam. It turns up in moon-name searches because it looks like a crescent, and using it as ornament on an unrelated name is the kind of mistake that is obvious to everyone who recognises it and invisible to everyone who does not. The crescent you want is 🌙 or ☾.

The practical difference between the two kinds matters too. ☽ and ☾ are text: they inherit whatever colour the app draws text in, so they sit quietly inside a name. 🌙 is an emoji: it arrives in colour, at emoji size, and some name fields reject it outright.

The phases are an ordered set, and that is unusual

U+1F311 to U+1F318 run new moon, waxing crescent, first quarter, waxing gibbous, full, waning gibbous, last quarter, waning crescent — in that order, deliberately. Almost no other emoji group has an intended sequence.

Which makes them useful for something no other symbol set on this site can do: a name that reads as a progression. 🌑🌓🌕 is three characters that say “increasing” to anyone who looks twice.
